What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that involve unhealthy thoughts, emotions, and behaviors surrounding food, eating, and body image. They can impact your physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.

Signs of an Eating Disorder:

If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone. Eating disorders are treatable, and seeking help is the first step toward recovery.

Common Types of Eating Disorders

• Anorexia Nervosa:People with anorexia nervosa severely restrict what they eat, usually because they’re really scared of gaining weight or have a distorted body image.

• Bulimia Nervosa: This disorder includes episodes of binge eating, which are then followed by actions to avoid gaining weight, like throwing up, working out a lot, or using laxatives inappropriately.

• Binge Eating Disorder (BED): This condition involves recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short time, closely followed by feeling shame and guilt afterward.

• Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): Previously known as selective eating disorder, ARFID involves avoiding certain foods or eating less without the fear of gaining weight. It may stem from sensory sensitivities or negative past experiences with food.

• Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED): This category covers eating disorders that might not tick all the boxes for a specific diagnosis but still show some pretty serious disordered eating habits. OSFED is actually the most frequently diagnosed eating disorder.
